First thing is to make sure you have desktop effects running. Open up System>Preferences>Appearance. then in the Visual Effects tab, choose 'normal' or 'extra'
Then
To install the basic dock just install the avant-window-navigator package using synaptic package manager.
Or
For a fully functional dock including all the additional applets you should install AWN from the testing repository, assuming you're using Ubuntu Hardy, just add this line to your software sources in the third-party software section:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/awn-testing/ubuntu hardy main

then install the following 2 packages:
avant-window-navigator-trunk
awn-extras-applets-trunk

Once installed, you can start it by going to Accessories>Avant Window Navigator

To change the options for AWN go to System>Preferences>Awn manager

Hope this helps. If you're not familiar with Synaptic yet or not sure how to add additional software repositories then a read through this should help....SynapticHowTo

For more detailed instructions or to install AWN on another distribution go to the AWN wiki here

The NAS does seem to allow uPnP. I thought it did but don't really know what uPnp is. Anyway, in the NAS control panel there is an option to, "Enabling Multimedia Service allows users to browse multimedia files on the server through UPnP DMA." so I might be in luck. I bought the DS207+ as it did seem to have good capabilities - there is a new big firmware release for it that I have not tired yet as well!

Although you are right, the point in buying the NAS was so I didn't have to have a PC on all the time, I might try your suggestion with Kiss Now and network shares just for fun - when I have time.

Thanks for your very helpful reply.

Depends how your nas is sharing files, if it uses samba then it definitely wont work (with the 1600's current firmware), if it's uPnP then you might be lucky.
You could try installing Kiss Now on your Ubuntu box then see if you can add your nas shares to the Kiss Now server (not sure if this is possible as I don't have any network storage to test it). This would also mean having your PC and nas on all the time though, which I guess kinda defeats the object of having a nas, i think this would be the only option for you.

i have just come across the kiss 1600, it looks great but i use a synology ds207+ nas to store all my media, from what you are saying and info i've read on the linksys site, it would not connect to my nas as kiss now (or equivalent) needs to be running! is this correct?

at the moment i have a neuros osd that connects to my nas and pcs (that all run Ubuntu).

great post - thanks

Yes. I had not tried it with KDE when I wrote the article, but I've tried it since and it worked. I didn't try all the applets though, so I can't be sure whether it works 100%.

Thanks for the comments, glad the guide worked.
Another little tip.....
I came across an issue after reinstalling ver.1.0.0.2 recently where upon clicking on a download link, nothing shows up in the download manager queue, the files do actually download despite this, but are incomplete and will not open.
The fix is just to click on the 'clear completed' icon in the download manager window (even though there is nothing to clear!), then restart eMusic Remote and download the tracks again.
More info here >>> http://code.google.com/p/emusicremote/issues/detail?id=8&can=1
